New co-Editor-in-Chief from January 2024

The British Psychological Society are delighted to introduce Professor Dawn Watling as co-Editor-in-Chief for British Journal of Developmental Psychology from 1 January 2024.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Prof. Michaela Gummerum for all of her involvement and commitment to co-editing the journal since 2018.

Dawn is Professor of Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London. During her early career, Dawn’s work explored children’s social-emotional understanding, with a particular focus on development of an understanding of impression management, of emotion recognition skills, and of expression of emotion within drawings. In recent years, Dawn is working with interdisciplinary teams and charity partners to advance the understanding of how environment can impact children and adolescents’ development and experience, through exploring the importance of online experiences (understanding developmental differences in the use of social media for risks and benefits) and offline experiences (evaluating the impact of engaging with nature on developmental changes in feelings of connection to nature, mental health and wellbeing over time).

Dawn is joining us with an expertise in using a variety of developmental methods and approaches. She is seeking to promote interdisciplinary research and work where researchers have partnered with organisations and/or those who have lived experience to co-design research:

“I am excited to be taking on this new role of co-Editor in Chief to continue to strengthen the position of BJDP within the Developmental Psychology journals and the international community.”
